REGULAR MEETING
The Regular Meeting is scheduled for June 20, 2003. The tentative venue is the Manchester Parish Library.

VIRTUAL SECRETARIAT
The LIAJA Executive has been discussing the feasibility of a virtual secretariat, as a possible solution to LIAJA’s homeless state. It is also asking for the donation of a computer to make the secretariat a reality.

CONTINUING EDUCATION
The Department of Library and Information Studies is offering a course, entitled “Copyright Issues Affecting Caribbean Libraries and Information Services”, from June 9th to July 25th, 2003. Contact DLIS at 927-2944 for registration information or visit the web site at http://wwwdls.uwimona.edu.jm

Special Course on Organizing Information: Using the Library of Congress Classification and Subject Headings. To be held at the DLIS from June 24 to 26, 2003.
Course presenter: Miss Rosemarie Runcie
Cost per participant J$6,000

Training Programme in Portal Development with special reference to MyLibrary, from July 2-4, 2003 at the DLIS. Organized by the  LIAJA Information Technology and Education & Training Working  Parties,   this three day workshop aims to  train members in the development of portals, and provide hands-on training will include the implementation of the major features of  the MyLibrary software and related MySQL features.

A two-day workshop on the design and creation of multimedia products, is scheduled for the end of August, 2003. Participants will be introduced to the theory of design, the creation of documents using Microsoft Publisher and Adobe Photoshop, the use of the digital camera and scanner. This workshop is organized by the Information Technology Working Party.


FROM THE JAMAICA LIBRARY SERVICE
Staff Movements
o Mrs. Winsome Hudson resigned from the position of Senior Director National Library Network, in April. She was an invaluable member of the JLS family and will be sadly missed.
o Mrs. Julette Wilson, joined JLS in May, as the Senior Librarian of the Schools Library Network.

Happenings
o The Government of Japan through the Japan’s Cultural Aid officially handed over six bookmobiles to JLS, in a ceremony held at the JLS headquarters on May 6, 2003.
o The period of Amnesty that was declared in March to recover overdue books, will end on June 30, 2003. It should prove to be effective.
o The “Give the Gift of a Book” project in partnership with the Sangster's Book Store, initiated on March 28, will continue until the target of 120,000 books is attained or surpassed. Public as well as staff donations have been solicited. The books may be given to a library of the donor’s choice.
o The JLS in collaboration with the Jamaica Commission for UNESCO marked the World Book and Copyright Day on April 23, with an exhibition on the “Right to Read and Copy.” The accompanying panel discussion focusing on copyright issues was informative, lively and productive .

* Ms. Reta Whittaker on the completion of her Master’s degree.
* Mrs. Norma Amenu-Kpodo on being awarded the inaugural LIAJA Librarian of the year and Mrs. Louria Farquharson, Dunoon Technical High School Library, for the Innovative School Library Award.
